Kampung Tarung

Tarung is probably the best of the 4 traditional villages near the centre of Waikabubak, Sumba. It is relatively unscathed by modern developements - in the classic style of two rowed line of authentic stilted grass roofed open plan verandered houses (most still appear occupied), with cromlech style graves down the centre of the village, some decorated. Ikat is stilll produced and sold by cheery, friendly local women from their veranders (sacraficed oxen horns on the walls), with animals kept below the houses (horses & pigs). Other good villages well worth visiting are Praijing, Tossi, Marrangga baki & Ratenggaro (biggest 14m roofs!) in the west. In the east well worth seeing is Prailiang. Most others round the island are unfortunately starting to display varying degrees of moderisation - corregated roofs, electricity, reinforced concrete graves.

    Easy to get to
If you pass through the town of Waikabubak and would like to see an easy-access traditional village, this is your choice. In terms of authenticity, however, there are others nearby without paved walkways, like Bondomaroto or Praijing, as well as further away in Tossi or Ratenggaro.

A traditional village in the city
Tarung traditional village is located in the heart of Waikabubak, the main city of Sumba Barat district. People living in the village are used to with visitors. The houses were well maintained, it was clean and decorated with bull skulls. However, we didn't go thoroughly inside the village nor taking the villagers picture, because we tried to respect their privacy and we don't want to see them as photography objects. Well, even though it is a tourist destination, real people are living there. That traditional houses are their houses. Overall, visiting this village is a valuable cultural experience. If you go there in the afternoon, you can sit on the roadside across the village, enjoy the view from the top with an amazing sunset.
