Ngada and Bajawa

This is truly a wonderful place: a lush, relatively cool area (around Bajawa) with charming and beautiful villages, great hot springs, and mytical mountains and forests. I loved driving around this area, saying high to all the friendly locals. I visited numberous villages (Bela, Bena, Gurusina), and climbed the enigmatic volcano (Gunung Inerie) that looms high over the area. Highly recommended: Melki Longa as a guide. A friendly, relaxed, reliable and knowledgable guide who speaks English very well. He can take you on tours around the area, explain local traditons and customs, and can arrange anything you like without any problems. Be in touch with him! (+6282260651320). He can often be found at Kristian's Homestay, a great place in central Bajawa from which to explore the area.

    Incredible people
We have rented a motorcycle and explored the area on our own. There are many beautiful traditional villages where people still live the traditional way of life. The houses are very unique with lot of history. What we found incredible, were the people. On few occasions we had to stop to look at a map, and suddenly there was always a local stopping asking if we need a help and trying to point us to the correct direction, just out of goodness of the heart. These people are so nice and genuine that they have won our hearts.

Beautiful trek through four Ngada Villages
We took a half day tour from the Manalula Villa just outside Bajawa. We were driven to the first village Luba. We then trekked to Bena, Tolalela, and Gurusina. The villages all had a similar set up. House on either side of a raised ceremonial area. The ceremonial area has megaliths marking graves of ancestors, and the male and female totems. The house have traditional paintings and carvings. Simple but beautiful. Villages are all very welcoming. You can buy ikat, macadamia, vanilla, and betel! The sales pitch is very low key. Donations are mandatory but only 20,000 r per group. The trek was hot so takes plenty of water. There is a homestay in Gurusina our favorite village in the area.
