Great waterfall and nice walk, not too far from Labuan Bajo

About 1.5 hours by road from Labuan Bajo including 30 minutes leaving the main road from LB to Ende. The last 30 minutes of driving is a rather bad road but ok for car and motorbike. 45 to 60 minutes tracking to the waterfall necessary one way, but a nice walk through jungle. At the place to stop the car/bike a villager was most happy to guide us to the waterfall. No entrance fee and you should probably pay 50 to 100 k for the guide. We were the only people on the day there and it is a bit of an adventure. I swam in the fall and we bought fresh fruits from the guide/villagers who were very friendly and happy (Jack fruit, banana, coconuts). There were no proper shops so you might want to bring water and snack. For me it was my highlight of Flores, but there are probably a few more excellent waterfalls. Do not expect proper signs or any form of organisation, but it was unspoilt and friendly people. Maybe GPS and an Indonesian phrasebook useful.

    Unique non-touristic experience
We hired motorbikes/scooters from Labuan Bajo and drove around 2 hrs to tiny village possibly called Rangat about 5 km from the main road. Easy to find with google maps and there is a sign from the main road directing to cunga rami. The small road was is pretty bad condition but perfectly doable with scooters if you go slowly. We stopped at a random house and met Lucy and her kids. She asked for 100 000 IDR per person to guide us to the waterfall. She was the kindest guide ever, let us stay in her house for 30 mins when it was raining. She showed and explained us different flowers and fed us candle nuts. It was about 30 min hike down to the waterfall with one river crossing. We had the waterfall to ourselves. We also paid 30 000 idr per person for a admission ticket. The hike back uphill was really hot, sweaty and tiring!

Forewarned is a good thing to enjoy this waterfall
Rami Cunca Waterfall, about 38ks along the same scenic road, no sign post, but on the left as you come around a right hand bend is a well-stocked shop (in comparison to any on the last 20ks) and directly opposite is a road (sic) with a archway with a sign saying Cacun Rami. 4kms along, can’t really call it a road, the surface is eroded so badly that it is simply rock road underlay, puddles, mud with patches of asphalt with no signage to tell you how far to go. People will start to solicit you whenever you stop or slow down to wonder how much further along this hell of a ‘road’ you have to go. Unlike Wulang, the villagers here have not gotten together to form a co-operative so, for km’s along the road people will offer to guide you to the waterfall. There are no set prices however Rp, 25,000 per person would be a reasonable amount to have the local knowledge. If you keep going until you reach a Y where the asphalt right hand looks way better than the rock rubble strewn left hand fork you have a choice. You can continue and go right and negotiate somewhere along there for your guide, or you can go 10m down the left fork and park in the garden there and sit on benches under trees there and organise with Mama there (who has 8 kids) for a guide. Best to establish a price before you head off so as not to have an awkward moment at the end. The walk from there is a pleasant stroll through rice padi with views of the waterfall ahead to begin then start the bush track, mother natures steps, roots and trees to hang on to getting steeper at the bottom. Swimming hole and sunbaking rocks at river at base of falls. Calculate an hour in and an hour and a half walking back out. Do not expect anyone to speak English. There are no kiosk’s apart from the one on the main road so make sure you take your water, hat, swimmers and strong shoes, thongs are doable but slippery and you will end up walking barefoot. Road and track very slippery if wet or raining. I stayed up top and because I can speak Indonesian I chatted with Mama about creating a village co-operative similar to that functioning at Wulang, I hope everyone can come to an agreement. Right at the end of my time there Mama told me that if we had continued past her house and on past the school we would have come across another kampong (small village) where the walk in to the waterfall is along the rock strewn but level river bed/bank. I cannot confirm it but it could be worth checking out.
