Nature in the area around the Nestos river is very beautiful. I suggest to downstream the river from Stavroupoli to Toxotes with canoe-kayak. It is a safe and easy route into the nature. Also you have to ability to travel upstream the river and try rafting into the forest. Don't miss it....

    Stunning river scenery!
    Kayaking down the river gorge is an unforgettable experience. This trip can be done in kayaks (wet) or in canoes (much drier); go for the kayak! There is also a footpath that runs along much of the gorge; we didn't do it but apparently it is equally lovely. The view of the gorge from the mountains to the North is also worth taking in; one of the best in the world!

    beautiful river with small biting creatures
    Beautiful river, many years ago I saw it on a train trip from Thessaloniki to Istanbul and this Summer I drove there. There is a detail however that may be worth mentioning. On the day I went, the shallow water by riverbank was populated by very small but biting animals, similar to prawns. They did not seem a big deal if you move around, but they immediatley come to bite your feet if you stop and stand still. I've canoed and crossed a number riversand freshwater bodies in the past but never find anything similar.
