grateful to have peaceful places like this that are clean, cared for and protected.
absolutely stunning walk along the lake with ample trails in park and nearby. Nice little history about sunken ship in park area, bathrooms clean, and in various points throughout park, lush colors last week of October. Well marked trails with maps at various locations. Some of trail is rugged with tree roots (not as extensive as in cave point, county park which is adjacent), and paved, dirt and gravel trail which was not rugged at all. Through the woods in parts, it was bumpy but you could run with a dog and not break an ankle. The terrain does change in various locations. Over all, it was gorgeous. Late in October the beach area was closed.

Autumn at the beach
It was about 8:05, our normal departure time. First stop was Whitefish Dunes State Park. There is a great big parking lot here, in three sections. We are one of only two cars here; one more passed through, and one other left when we arrived. The peace and quiet was delightful, and especially after a rain, it is a remarkable treat for the senses. Is there a scent to falling leaves? It must be so, For scent, the most evocative of senses, Sweet melancholy memories bring, Of high school floats, and formal dances, And a longing for far distant Spring. The death of leaves reminds us that The winter of our lives comes near, We kick the piles of rustling leaves, And cling to memories now clear, And deeply sigh, Summer to grieve. The profusion of plants in the undergrowth is quite surprising. They must get sufficient sunlight and rain here. Multiple pathways lead to the beach, mostly closed. There is a display all about shipwrecks on the Lake, and a sign marking the 45th parallel, halfway to the North Pole.

Short visit due to rain
Was in the area over the 4th of July weekend and decided to check out this park. Was ignored by the ranger so I wasn’t sure where to go. Looks like this park isn’t as popular as Potowatomi so I didn’t have trouble finding parking. At that point it was getting cloudy fast and could hear thunder. Didn’t go down to the beach. The first beach was closed but I went as far as I could and took pics. Decided to grab a snack and sit by the water in the picnic area. Wasn’t there very long since there was going to be a mass exodus due to the thunder. Traffic was terrible trying to get out of Door County. Would be nice to make it back on a less stormy day.
