So Worth It!

What a gem on Belle Isle. The park around the museum is a bit downtrodden but the museum and lakefront itself were just thoroughly enjoyable. Many cool exhibits and artifacts and so much history! Was so pleased to learn more about the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald and its relationship to Detroit and the Great Lakes. Received special attention from the museum manager, Steve, who happened to be walking around the building and grounds......what a knowledgeable man. Check this out!

    Incredibly well done
Like many others, I was not expecting a lot out of this museum, but it was a great surprise. The front room is a reconstruction of a gothic room on a steam ship that used to travel to Detroit. It is very pretty. The displays that follow are approachable in the way they are written and easy to understand. There are some great interactive things for kids, including scales, a knot tying exhibit, and an exhibit on boat flag language. The wheelhouse of the ship that is the front of the museum was very interesting and the employee that was manning it was kind enough to let us know a ship would be passing soon, which was very neat to see. Overall, a well done museum and a definite must if you are visiting Belle Isle.

    Hands on
I was surprised to see the amount of hands on activities in this building. Well Done! Walk up the stairs and you are on the bridge of a ship, looking out at the water, with all of the controls and maps at your hands.
