Gillespie Museum, Florida, United States

4.5 (14 reviews) Saturday: Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #18 in DeLand Speciality Museums

Very Interesting

The Gillespie Museum, Stetson University’s earth science museum, houses an historic mineral collection, with nearly a thousand of its 15,000 specimens on display in changing exhibits. There are also small galleries devoted to natural history, collecting, Florida ecosystems, fluorescent minerals, volcanism and the rock cycle. The grounds of the museum and of the adjacent Rinker Environmental Learning Center provide outdoor classrooms and native plant landscapes. Hours may vary during holidays and university breaks. Please see website for more information.

    Definitely a Hidden Gem!
We attended the opening night of an exhibit about agatized coral. The museum is beautiful and there are several interactive exhibits for kids. It's the only gem and mineral museum in Florida; the next nearest is in North Georgia! A great place to learn about Florida!

I like the the Kids Cave showing minerals in UV light
The Minerals in this are more than rocks, they represent many of what we call gem stones and where they are found in our earths crust. It is a self guided tour, students staff the museum so questions may or may not be answered but a great way to pass an afternoon.
