Fort Gaines, Alabama, United States

Very interesting, well preserved and managed. An important part of the Civil War I did not know much about.

A restored fort that dates back to the colonial era.

    An Unexpected &Informative History Lesson!
We had wandered beyond Gulf Shores to see Ft. Morgan and discovered that there was a sister fort across Mobile Bay called Ft Gaines that could be reached by car ferry. So we had about a 30 minute wait before boarding the ferry then enjoyed the 40 minute ferry ride over to Dauphone Island. From the ferry landing it's just short distance to the entrance to Ft Gaines. There is a small entrance fee but you have nearly complete access to all of the fort. It takes about 30-40 minutes to see the fort ad wander through its museum. Plenty of time remained to catch the ferry back to where we started. If you miss the ferry, there is a land route over a causeway to get you back to Mobile but it is along drive.

Great historic park with museums inside
We ended up checking this place out while waiting for the next ferry over to Gulf Shores and it was a great place to stumble onto. The fort lets you come and go at your own pace with the self-guided tour. We wandered the cannons, magazines, and barracks and enjoyed the museum inside the fort. Well preserved and you can really get the feel of what this place was like. Price was good too for a self-tour while supporting the preservation efforts. Little gift shop that is your entrance and exit was nice as well.
