Great Museum and Artwork

Galerija Meštrović houses the masterpieces of Ivan Meštrović carved in marble, bronze and wood. The house was built based on Meštrović's design (1931 - 1939), and was intended to be his family summer residence, working studio and exhibition space. It is surrounded by a Mediterranean garden which, with its bronze sculptures and the view of the sea and of central Dalmatian islands makes a unique example of landscape architecture.

The garden is as beautiful as the sculptures.
Ivan Meštrović (1883-1962) was the most important Croatian sculptor of the 20th century, and I’d never even heard of him before I came across the Meštrović Gallery listed in a guide book. (My face is red!) Surrounded by gorgeous grounds, the gallery is housed in a stunning villa overlooking the Adriatic. Meštrović, himself, designed and financed the gallery, completed in 1939. He intended it to be a combination of living quarters, exhibition rooms, and a work studio. He lived here until the Second World War, then went into exile. A short distance away from the gallery is the tiny Church of the Holy Cross. It is a religious/artistic complex also created by Meštrović who bought the old estate in 1939. He redesigned the entire complex and spent the next three decades creating the interior wooden reliefs featuring the life of Christ. Many of the reliefs were created outside his homeland while he was in exile during WW2. After WW2, Meštrović emigrated to the U.S.A. and lived there until his death in 1962. He is buried in the family mausoleum by Otavice, Croatia. Admission to both gallery and church: 50 kuna. One of the gallery attendants will open the church.

    Great Museum and Artwork
This ended up being an unexpected and very special experience. We went on a whim and it ended being a favorite of ours. The grounds themselves are beautiful and offer great views of the sea. The sculptures are beautiful and help you understand who Ivan was while he was sculpting. We even found out that he was a professor in our hometown of Syracuse NY and that was very cool to learn. Ivan was influenced heavily by August Rodin so fans of him will like Ivan's work.
