Skistar Sälen, Dalarna County, Sweden

3.5 (164 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #9 in Salen Ski & Snowboard Areas • Cross-country Ski Areas

Sweden’s largest skiing resort

All kind of slopes and skiing. Lots of shops and other entertainment for the whole family. Lot of different accomodations, hotels, cabins etc. Lindvallen is best for beginners and families with kids, Tandådalen for the more advanced skiers. All restaurants are overpriced , for both food and drinks. Free skibus on your skiliftcard, but stops running evenings, so you are forced to take a taxi back from the dinner restaurant. Few chairlifts and generally too low liftcapacity, creating long queues at high season. On top of it Lindvallen in particular has a tendency to close the chairlifts early when windy, using the ”safety” excuse, creating unacceptable queues.

    Salen v Trysil - skiing
Our Skistar liftcard for Trysil gave us the opportunity to try out Salen so we drove for about 80 minutes from Trysil to Salen. Parking anywhere near the ski lifts in Salen was a problem. This resulted in a long walk on very icy areas to get to and from the car. Skiing was sort of OK, but with way to many t-bar lifts for my liking. I have been spoiled with good skiing areas around the world, and for that reason I am afraid that Salen will not feature near the top of my preferred ski destinations. Sorry Salen!! I will stick with the Skistar area in Trysil which I enjoy more when in Scandinavia.

A very commercial ski area, where you are never far from a advertising board or a big chain company.
I skied at Lindvallen first, pretty dull, up the hill, down the hill.... groundhog ski. Nearly all the runs are the same length, same aspect, straight lines... dull as.... it is also very commercial McDs right at the bottom of run and other modern big chain companies... If you want to experience Nordic skiing in a scenic area then this isn't the place to be. The plus for Lindvallen is the kids stuff and if I wasn't teaching my 6 and 8 year old to ski it is the last place in Sweden I would want to ski at. Tandadalen & Hundfjallet are part of Salen, but are 14km drive away, but well worth it. They are link with a tow and have much more varied runs where you can actually feel like you are skiing on a hill or a forest, the runs are also great for kids especially at Hundfjallet and it's less commercial too. I see no reason why when going up a tow I need to look at several 3m high advertising boards. Overall great for kids, but if you are adults looking for a Nordic ski experience head to Trysil or Lillehammer valley.
