Fascinating

Fascinating place to visit. Layers of history to discover over the past few hundred years. The boat companies suggest 70 minutes is enough time to explore but definitely needs a few hours to see properly. Worth packing your own drinks as the cafe know they have a captive audience and charge ridiculous prices.

    Great day in Spinalonga
If you are staying in Agios, just take a bus ride to Elounda, then have a walk and swim around big Spinalonga island - you may walk the 3 hours tour and discover the very best spots for swimming. Have lunch in Elounda (at Olondi restaurant for example), and then take again the bus or taxi to Plaka. Boats to Spinalonga takes 5 mins and 10 euros. Visit of Spinalonga can take between 1 to 2 hours depending if you wander around or not. This is a perfect day and no need to take expensive guided tour ;)

Well worth a visit, highly recommend having a guide
A lovely way to spend half a day if you are visiting Crete. We walked into Plaka from our hotel and bought tickets for the boat trip which took approx. 10 minutes and cost 10 euros for a return. Having read previous reviews we were hoping to find a tour guide and very fortunately we met a lovely lady called Georgia who was a professional guide on the island. She was full of interesting stories and was very knowledgeable about Spinalonga, both as a leper colony but also under Venetian and Ottoman rule. She was able to show us original architectural features from the different periods which made us appreciate the long history of the place. If you are visiting Spinalonga we would highly recommend having a guide as it gave us a real feel for the experience of the people on the island, that we would not have acquired from just walking around on our own. Booking a guide through the hotel would have cost over 3 times as much, so it is worth finding a guide on the island if possible!
