Rethymnon Old Town, Crete, Greece
4.5 (8.250 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Crete Neighborhoods
Picturesque, buzzling but yet calm and peaceful.
Get lost in the labyrinth of narrow streets and picturesque Orthodox churches at Rethymnon Old Town. With both Venetian and Turkish influences, the area is home to a beautiful mix of architecture and culture, from the Neratze Mosque to the magnificent Venetian fortress. Also known for its wonderful dining scene, take a seat at one of al fresco restaurants while you tuck into a local Greek salad or head to one of the Old Town’s bustling bars. Relax to the sound of calm waves at the port or hop on a sunset cruise from the Old Venetian Harbour. – Tripadvisor

Lovely place to eat, drink and shop
So many shops for wood, stones, jewels, souvenirs and more. Don’t be tempted to buy from the first shop on the edges of the town and wait till you venture into the centre. There are so many bars and restaurants to choose from. I would recommend not going to the bigger restaurants in the centre but going to the smaller cafe style place on the smaller side streets.

Traveling safe during pandemics: Palazzino di Corina
We decided to go to Crete for a week in the end of October the very special year when pandemics rules the world. We haven’t regret that! It felt safe and easy to follow the recommendations about keeping distance, wearing mask in stores, regular hand wash and use of sanitizer. Rethymno is a very cozy town, in a perfect size. Old Town where we stayed at the very good hotel Palazzino di Corina offers a friendly feeling. Actually the Hotell definitely was one of the very best in a top 10 - with Mr Apostolis who offered a nearly family feeling and gave us real nice ideas about places, tavernas or the very best coffee shops. The weather was the best so we could walk and avoid buses and also made something great for our health with 10 km by foot every day in the sun. I’m thinking that this pandemic will following us for a long time, and we’ll have to find new behaviors when we can travel. Stay safe and take care- it’s possible to travel to at least some places even if the virus is there.
