Fortaleza San Fernando, Cortes Department, Honduras

A wonderful surprise
During my recent visit to Honduras I spent the day with some friends who surprised me with this fort. If you do not like history you may not appreciate it, but I love history and end enjoyed every minute of my time here. The fort is well preserved and restored. Hire a guide to get the benefit of the history behind this place. Fort San Fernando was the main fort of the Spaniards on the Caribbean coast of Central America, but I leave the rest of the story for you to enjoy.

Fort Visit
A truly remarkable fort constructed during Spanish colonial times. We visited towards the mid afternoon, as the sun had already begun to set, as there are minimal shade options here (so come prepared). You need a total of 1.5 hours to see the museum and the entirety of the fort. A guide is a must otherwise you are effectively wasting your time not learning anything about the place. Our guides name was Julio and he was FANTASTIC. Don't forget to go to the upper level and walk around as well. Online it says it is closed M-W but at the time of writing this and visiting (May 3rd) it was definitively open most, if not all, days until 4 or 5pm.
