    Pity Poor Chilwa
At the time of writing, this lake and the whole ecosystem it supports are imperiled. Lake Chilwa may be Malawi's second largest lake, but it is only a few metres deep at the best of times, and this year it has largely dried up for the second time in the last 20 years. There are hundreds of fishing villages in the vicinity, which depend on the lake for their survival, so this development, whether caused by interference or climate change, is of great concern to people in Kachulu. Even in its shrunken state, Lake Chilwa was a very attractive place with mighty Mount Mulanje in the distance and picturesque mud-brick villages along the receding lake shore. It is also within striking distance of Zomba, the nation's former capital. We enjoyed the trip out here despite the poor condition of the lake.
