Wonderful museum.

We stopped here on our drive from Kastoria to Thessaloniki, stopping 1st at the New Museum of Aigai. It's not completed, like the excavations of the Palace, Theater, Burial Cluster of the Queens, Sanctuary of Eucleia, or the huge cemetery that we tried to access along a narrow lane, all parts of the 1996 UNESCO Archaeological Site of Aigai. We parked in the big lot and walked 300 m northwest to the Great Tumulus Museum. After standing in the opening queue for 20 minutes, we paid $13 each using a credit card and were given an entry # to join another smaller queue at the tunnel entrance. Once inside, after our eyes adjusted to the dark, we took our time strolling through the 5 rooms with displays of treasures, weaponry and other tomb finds, large tomb facades and even some frescoes, all from the 4th C BC and with English descriptions. Wonderful museum.

    Amazing and moving museum
I was lucky to visit several archaeological museums in several countries and I can say that this is by far one of the best. The artefacts are just incredibile and so is the setting and the way in which the collections are exhibited. The experience is very moving and is totally worth the trip to Vergina and the entrance fee of the museum. I couldn't recommend this site highly enough!

    Bedazzling
The "museum" simply is amazing. You are actually entering the dug-up tumulus of an ancient tomb. The artefacts found within the tombs simply are bedazzling revealing a culture of unbelievable wealth, power and refinement. Be prepared for a lot of gold. The site is of central importance for Greek history and genetics. It should not be missed during a visit to the country. The only thing that spoilt our experience was a loud and aggressive tour guide. She actively made it difficult for us to see some of the exhibits and that when it was getting close to closing time by guiding a large group of people straight in front of us and cutting our view of the windows. She then went on to shout to the point that she could be heard hundreds of metres away failing to show respect for the nature of the monument (a grave) or visitors who pay to enter, even though they do not employ her services. The shouting went on for the remainder of our stay in the tumulus to the point that we had trouble communicating with each other or discussing the exhibits. (She would not make space for others but took up the entire window with her group.) I understand that this is a private professional that simply makes her own income at the site and is not connected to it. It is not acceptable for her to disrupt the experience of visitors who do not wish to employ her services to this extent. I hope that such individuals will be dealt with by the management of the site in order to allow the enjoyment of this cultural monument by all.
