Transportation Museum, Central Hungary, Hungary

4.5 (23 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #10 in Pest County Speciality Museums

Excellent Value For Those Interested in Trams etc

I made the short trip on suburban railway from Budapest to Szentendre to visit this museum - and felt it well worthwhile. The fact that the trip only cost me around 1 euro each way as an add-on my Budapest travel ticket was a bonus. Those that moan about the price should consider what one might pay elsewhere - around 3 euros for an admission with a photo pass seems fine to me, and those in the party who don’t want to take photos get in even cheaper! There is a fine collection of trams through the ages, so even though there is a mix of old and new trams still running on the streets of Budapest, there are plenty of others to see here. There are also a few buses and engines, but the trams are the star of the show! The volunteer staff don't speak a lot of English, but in context there are no issues with paying the entrance fee etc.

    Easy to get to
The museum is right next to the suburban railway station at Szentendre. There is a trick to buying rail tickets to get here. The ticket buying machines have language buttons for quite a few languages. You get yourself your usual city ticket or day pass, then buy an extension of this from the end of the city zone (Bekasmegyer) to Szentendre. Some trains only go this far, but the Szentendre ones seem to be every 30 mins on weekdays. This is only 310 Florints each way. You do not validate this ticket on the train as it is dated and timed already. It is an easy walk to the museum and I found I was outnumbered by staff on the day I was there. There are vehicles from buses to trams to railway vehicles. Some are well restored, but some are rusting in the open. It is a pity that only a couple of exhibits have an English sign. There is quite a lot to see, with infrastructure included and detailed photo histories of many parts of Hungary. Walking outside is hard on the ballast between the rails.

    Pleasurable.
A matured age Australian who still loves to play trains and all to do with aged transportation our visit to this location was enjoyable and of significant history to the past of Hungarian transportation especially trams. It may be no York National Railway Museum in the UK or other larger preservation transportation museums you can visit around the world but it has its place, its meaning and purpose and for this a visit is recommended whether your young or of matured age to see the past that has allowed or greatly contributed to what we have to-day in public transport systems.Presentation and layout of exhibits excellent and cleanliness of facility internal and external those associated with this venue should be applauded. Andrew and I from Australia felt warmly welcomed by staff or volunteers as they may be at this facility and extremely comfortable to recommend a visit to those who have a passion and interest in transportation history.
