Living History, worth the time!

The 50-year-old Skanzen is the biggest open air museum of Hungary and is situated at the foot of the Pilis Mountains, on the territory of a nature reserve. On the 60 hectares 312 buildings can be visited, all organised into regional units. The unique flora and fauna of the Museum makes its natural surroundings special too. The permanent exhibitions of the Skanzen take the visitors back to the rural countryside of 100-200 years ago, where walking among old buildings settled in a traditional settlement pattern, visitors have the unique experience of folk architecture, interior furnishings and way of life. Weekdays and holidays come to life in yards, houses, barns, workshops and churches: the housekeeper is busy in the kitchen, the miller pours grain to the mill-hopper, animals are loud in the farmyard and a bell calls the pupils to the village school.

    Living History, worth the time!
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Skanzen in September 2022. Be sure to plan significant time as the place is sprawling. We were lucky to go with a Hungarian relative, and we have VERY limited abilities in Hungarian, but I suspected both helped improve our experience. The wonderful, friendly staff were excited to share their knowledge and were receptive to our questions. A knowledge of Hungary's past is helpful too. There are many new experiences being added, making it worth the time to visit. For me, this is not a 'once is enough' experience.

    Nice!
We visited the Hungarian Open Air Museum on a working day in July 2020. It was big and spacious. Unfortunately the train inside the area did not operate. :-( There were only a few people around, mostly young children in groups. Admission fee was HUF 2,000 for adults. (Under the age of 6, it was free.) Parking for passenger car was HUF 900 and you could only pay by cash. All in all, it was nice program to see how our ancestors were living!
