Great place to spend an afternoon!

What lovely boardwalks, and trails that meander through marshes and woods! There was plenty of signage sharing information about the history and eco-system. It was delightful to be among the Spanish Moss, and the Palms We took two short trails; both were loops. One was around the burial sites and the other was on the Dennis Creek Trail. We walked about 1.5 miles. The scenery continuously changes, the trails are maintained and on a weekday in February, it was not crowded at all!

    Spectacular Sunset
A quick Sunset stop after a day trip to Cedar Key. Had lunch at 29 North and toured a rental at Harbour Master. Would love to come back. Explore the trails and history of Shell Mound.

Good signage and a short hike to see it all.
This easy, .3 mile, mostly tree-covered, hike is around the largest shell mound on the Gulf coast. At its tallest point, the shell mound is 28 feet tall. Archeologists agree that the beginning layers of the mound were placed about 7,000 years ago. Gulf coast people survived off the bounty of the sea and used their refuse (shells, bones, and broken tools) from their daily lives to fortify the mud flats and make them more habitable. Parts of the mound has been eroded to the point that you can see the layers of shell. Near the large parking area at the end of the road there is a fishing pier, a place to launch kayaks, a single bathroom and trash cans. There is ample signage to explain the different things along the path. There are other hiking trails in the vicinity, but we did not avail ourselves of them as it had been a very hot day.
