    Beautiful walk and fun drive
We have been here a few times in different seasons. In May, the swarms of bugs we’re unstoppable (even with bug spray), but we have had wonderful visits in February and October. The River Trail is an easy walk, even for our kindergartener. Much of the walk is on an elevated boardwalk. The swamp and river are beautiful and peaceful. The nature drive is fun but you may have to go off road a little as we did to go around a fallen tree. Once we drove through while they were doing a controlled burn which was fascinating.

    Interesting Drive
There is a 10 mile road through the refuge that gives you a good view of what the area looked like before it was settled. The folks around here call it scrub land, but that doesn't do it justice. It's really a wooded marsh. We stopped at a nice black water lake a nd saw egrets, a kingfisher and an osprey. It's not really pretty, but seeing part of the gulf coast in it's natural state is an eye opener.
