Cedar Key Fishing Pier, Florida, United States

Eclectic little Beach town

We took a great boat tour of the islands and learned some interesting history of the area. Next time I want to visit the history museum... we heard from more than one fellow visitor that is was very interesting. Beautiful sunsets are a big reason people visit!

    Great fishing pier!
Cedar Key is a great place to visit with small shops and restaurants to eat at. They have a swimming beach and kayak and canoe rentals at the city beach (different place than pier but about 1/2 mile away) . The pier was updated and built by the Army Corps of Engineers several years ago after a hurricane had destroyed the wooden one that was in its place. The new one is made of solid concrete and metal railings with lots of room for fishing and other things. There are restrooms (nice ones) and a fish cleaning area with running water right on the pier itself. There is a wheelchair-accessible ramp and also stairs to get up to the pier. The nearest bait shop is just down the road. Several dot the Cedar Key area as well as ga stations and small general stores. I have caught all kinds of fish off this pier and seen many types. Very large black drum is common. Sheepshead, Channel and Sailfin catfish, Redfish on occasion and spotted Trout. Rays and even eels are caught by bottom fishing with live or frozen shrimp. The occasional shark is also caught here. The tides make the water flow fast here and a heavy weight (I use 3 or 4 oz depending on the weather) is required during the main tide change. During slack tide the fish are very active but it only lasts about an hour. Incoming tide seems to be better than outgoing but both have active fishing. I suggest a bottom rig with good weight and shrimp or crab as bait. Gulp shrimp also work and are popular. Fishing here is fun because when you are done, you can grab a bite to eat and drink at the locl bar/Resturants. I suggest Duncans or 83 West.

    Cedar Key Pier
Very nice ,clean well maintained pier. Those that were fishing seemed to have a good day as everybody was bringing a catch in. There are rest rooms which are clean and the view of the Gulf is unmatched. There are Pelicans all over the place which makes for great photography.
