Oum er Rbia River, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco

A stunning view

I have a friend with a holiday home in Azemmour so I pop over every now and again. Last time, we had a walk around the Medina and a walk along the riverbank. There's a new café there and we simply watched the people go by as well as the working feluccas (small fishing boats) setting off to catch fish. Then we walked to the bridge, the nearest one to town, simply to see Azemmour nestling on the banks of the mighty river and, in the other direction, the majestic vista of more bridges carrying the railway line, the Route Nationale and the motorway. It really is a wonderful sight.

    A magnificent vista
Going down from the town centre along the ramparts and cutting left, following the road steeply down, brings the visitor to this fantastic view of Morocco's 2nd largest river. From the bridge heroically straddling the great expanse of water, on the left can be seen the old Medina nestling above the river. On the right can be seen an extraordinary array of further bridges, the route nationale, the railway and the motorway. It truly is a monumental sight in both directions. Further on, if one has transport, one can access the far bank of the river at its egress to the sea by continuing over the bridge, turning left at the main junction and taking the track a kilometre or so along. At one time there were some basic cafés there, but I haven't visited this particular part for a while so I don't know if they are still in existence or not. However, this part of the coast is still popular with locals for a swim and sunbathe. It's a great view from that bridge at any time, but I last saw it at sunset, when it was truly romantic and memorable.
