Museum of Moroccan Judaism, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco

One of a kind
The Museum just reopened after major renovation and it is a delight. Our guide was the curator, whose passion for Moroccan Jewish history was contagious. (The signs are in French and Arabic, so we were fortunate to walk through with an English speaker.) There is a lovely display of jewelry made by Jewish artisans as well as a souk-size jeweler's workshop. Other exhibits illustrate religious and family life. The museum is located in a residential area. If your party is three persons or less, you can take a petit taxi from the city center for 25 dirham (about $3.00). As we were leaving, a large group of teenagers was arriving for a school field trip and I was happy to see that is it not just a tourist attraction.

Well worth a visit
The Jewish Museum in Casablanca is well worth a visit. Set in the suburbs in very pleasant surroundings and housed in a purpose built building, it gives you an insight into the trials and tribulations that Jews in Morocco have experienced. When I visited, I was the only spectator and I was taken around by the director who looked more like Moses that the real thing. There is a great display of artifacts and even blades used in circumcision procedures. At one stage in Morocco's history, the Jewish component were the craftpersons and there are many examples of their work. Perhaps the aspect of the museum that hit home the most was the large migration of Jews to other countries including Israel, France and Spain. Judaism is a religion I know little about, but thanks to Moses, I now have a glimmer of the religion and the way of life that Jews have gone through over the years. Ceramacist
