Dar Al Ala, Casablanca-Settat, Morocco

5.0 (10 reviews) Spent Ranking #29 in Casablanca Speciality Museums

Not huge, but interesting

Of course, I myself am a fan of the Andalusian music, so perhaps I'm a bit partial. But as small-scale, specialty museums go, this is a good one. Examples of old instruments, handwritten manuscripts of the songs, pictures of famous musicians...all in a beautifully restored traditional mansion. It's a little hard to find — it's actually on a back street behind the Mosque of Moulay Youssef — ask around; everyone knows it. And the building itself is well marked.

    A hidden treasure
The name doesn't reflect anything. It literally means the house of Music. It is not a shop, nor an eatery. It is simply a unique Moroccan house, with great Arab architecture dedicated to Andalusian music lovers. From what I gathered this house was donated by one of Moroccan traditional music fans. It comprises a wide range of ancient musical instruments, hundreds of audios of Moroccan Andalusian music called Al Ala. The house is open all week with free admission and on Thursday, they hold little concerts for members and guests to come and join in over a free mint tea. This is a foundation aiming at preserving an ancient music patrimony.
