Puente de la Mujer, Capital Federal District, Argentina

4.5 (6.094 reviews) Spent Ranking #47 in Buenos Aires Bridges

Unique for sure

We walked along the water in Porto Madero to approach this iconic bridge, one of Buenos Aires' famous landmarks that gives the city its global recognition. The "Women's Bridge" as it translates, is named for the many nearby streets named after women but it holds more respect in its own right, as a way to recognize and celebrate the power and significance of women. You can walk across its solid wooden boardwalk in about 5 minutes and snap photos and admire its incredible and unique architecture and meaning.

    Mysterious woman
Puente de la Mujer (Woman’s Bridge) holds great mystery for me. Wikipedia is very specific about how this cantilever footbridge designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava swings open to allow water traffic to pass. I could even see a stabilizing pylon that must embrace the opened bridge. Yet a waitress in nearby El Boleo Bar (see my review, “Great bridge view”) absolutely insisted that the bridge doesn’t open and instead referred me to one across town that does! No matter. The bridge is quite picturesque, particularly when lit up at night. The name comes because many streets in the surrounding Porto Madero neighborhood are named for women. The dramatic cantilever is supposed to evoke a couple dancing tango.

A Beautiful Sculpture aka A Bridge
The Puente de La Mujer is in a word **Different**. It consists of 3 section, though walking across you would perhaps not realise it. The middle section, intended to represent 2 Tango dancers, rotates 90* in less than 2 minutes to allow ships to pass through. The pedestrian footing looks to be birch or teak, or some hard wood. The bridge to my understanding is for pedestrians only. Both by day and lit up at night, it is a fantastic piece of sculpture, albeit a functional Bridge. Quite a few resturants along the water from side adjacent to the *Iron sailing ship *
