Laténium Parc et musée d'archéologie, Canton of Neuchatel, Switzerland

4.5 (118 reviews) Monday: Spent Ranking #1 in Hauterive Speciality Museums

Best museum to learn about the life of Celts with reconstructed pile houses

If you are going to the Latenium from the port of Neuchatel you don't have to pay for the boat ride to the museum. Just tell the ticket taker you are going to the museum and show your museum entrance ticket when you return. We rode there on an ordinary boat but were fortunate enough to catch the 1912 restored paddle wheel steamer back. The museum is fascinating and contains a wide variety of Celtic artifacts. Outside in the park you can view a reconstruction of a number of Celtic houses and if you look below the water near the dock you will see a sunken model of a Celtic boat. There is a small cafeteria there for lunch with a great view of the lake.

    Excellent museography, very educational
The very advanced museography makes a lot out of a relatively modest amount of material. Highly educative, it communicates very well and would be great for schoolchildren to develop a real interest in ancient history at an age when they can be most stimulated for later life. One or two exhibits are stunning, such as the huge facsimile Prehistoric boat from the lake and the recreated heads of ancient humans as you arrive. The temporary exhibition of the Celts is very good. This museum represents a crucial area and period in current archeology.

    Trip with my Dad
Museum is fantastic, feels new, it’s very interesting, great exhibition and worth a visit. Staff very friendly. Great for all ages. Very reasonably priced entrance fee and you can get an audio guide in English, Italian, French or German. Best on a sunny day to experience the vast outdoor space by the lake. Loses marks for the fact that all the exhibits are described only in French or German. The crepes in the cafe were tortilla wraps and were empty of filling and tasted awful, the parking and signage is a little confusing and the museum windows need a good clean. Sort these out and it would get a 5 out of 5.
