Klingnauer Stausee, Canton of Aargau, Switzerland

4.5 (10 reviews) Spent Ranking #1 in Klingnau Bodies of Water • Nature & Wildlife Areas

Birding Area Number 1

This is one of the most popular areas for birding excursions in Switzerland due to the artificial reservoir near the river Aare and the Rhine delta. In winter it is a favourite resting place for water fowl and migrating birds. On my last day trip just before Christmas 2014 we counted 58 species. This area certainly earns being a place worthy of protection as defined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources: “A protected area is a clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed, through legal or other effective means, to achieve the long term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values.” For birders: go early in the mornings or as the sun is setting, try to avoid weekends as the foot-traffic around the reservoir (joggers, dog-walkers, families, roller skaters, hikers and bikers etc) can be quite heavy. There is one look-out tower with great views over to the German side, which is a good place to have a break, however, there are no public toilets. You can walk around the whole "Stausee" and there are some cafes/restaurants in the surrounding villages (Gippingen or Kleindöttingen). The whole terrain is flat and even, so ideal for wheelchairs and those who prefer walking tarred paths.
