Interesting stop in Mariposa

Way more interesting than you might suppose, this museum is a gem. The history of the area during the gold rush proves to be captured beautifully in displays. I love the old time general store as you enter stop in, well worth it.

Worth a stop and a visit!
A wealth of information about the town, the area, and the early gold mining business. The layout is very easy to follow and provides a brief explanation under each display ...and numerous historical photographs. Well worth an hour or two to learn about this area. Minimal admission fee (or a donation?) ... worth the a/c and clean bathrooms!

A good stop prior to Yosemite for historical background of the region.
This is a really good primer on the history of the region, including Yosemite Park. A lot of it focuses on the mining boom, and the development of the parklands. Exhibits are arranged on a pathway, with 'stalls' representing different themes (mining camp, courthouse, schoolhouse, etc.) It's good, and there are a lot of knick-knacks on display--almost too many. Signage explaining the various exhibits and history are well placed. The museum does have a bit of a cluttered feel, however. Outside are larger pieces of mining equipment and a carriage house. Don't miss those. Admission is $5 for adults, and there is a giftshop with a lot of books on the area as well. It's a good stop for an hour as a bit of background before heading to Yosemite NP.
