Lac des Settons, Bourgogne-Franche-Comte, France

4.0 (246 reviews) Spent More than 3 hours Ranking #1 in Nievre Bodies of Water

Prettiest of the both big reservoirs in the Morvan.

Lovely water to swim in on the north part of the lake. Speedboats/jetskis and other dangerous equipment to swimmers are kept way out of reach (southern part). As it lies at 580m above sealevel the water is fresh and clean. The Lac de Panneciere is much lower (around 320m above sealevel) and has a much muddier bottom. Furthermore: LdPanneciere attracts a lot of often agressive fishermen. Dressed like soldiers and heavily smoking they scare you off. They do not tolerate anyone coming near their countless fishing rods (and they leave their trash behind when leaving).

Relaxing place to spend a sunny day
This lake offers a range of activities including: boat trips, peddle boats, sailing, swimming, bike riding tracks and walking. It is possible to walk around the lake, which is approximately 15km in distance. There are plenty of places to stop for refreshments along the way. At the Les Settons end of the lake, there is a school museum and a picturesque little dam. If you are on the area it is worth a visit - but don’t go too far out of your way!

If you're into pedalos and don't mind the pong ..
The pongy smell may have had something to do with the heatwave, who knows, but if you moved to the south of this reservoir, it was a lot more pleasant, less commercial, cleaner and away from the crowds.
