Bornholm Art Museum, Bornholm, Denmark

4.5 (69 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #4 in Gudhjem Art Museums

A showcase of Bornholm's Art Life

The museum has a wonderful white on white architectural design and spacious outdoor garden for sculpture display. Beside looking at the planting and craft from Danish Master (Oluf Host, Karl Isakson...) you would be amazed by the artistic scenery from the windows that look like great paintings. 3-story of exhibits to explore. There are also cafe and museum shop. After viewing the museum's excellent collections, I would strongly recommend that you take a slow walk down to the Sanctuary Cliffs to experience the scenic yet dramatic rock formation. Which will take you an additional half an hour to one hour, depending on your level of fitness. It is totally worth it!

The building itself is worth a visit
Get ready for not only a fantastic building placed in the middle of the rough nature, but for a piece of architectural work that is part of the exhibition as well as a piece of art in itself. Bornholm is known for both the unusual rocky nature that you will not find anywhere in Denmark and this building is emphasizing this in a elegant way. The permanent exhibition shows the important works of local artist through times – and we were lucky to also get access to another exhibition showing something typical for Bornholm – glass. We had our mind blown by “SUN & MOON” sculptural glass work by Artis Nimanis. Cannot be described - fortunately you have a chance to experience it yourself until August 19th, 2018. GO! GO! GO!

Outstanding match between building and nature
This 25 year old building still seem very fresh in the way the architecture matches the scenic area of the Sanctuary Cliffs. Do not miss the exhibition tower. The permanent exhibition focus on the Bornholmer-school and has important paintings among other by Weie and Høst. I had a combined ticket for six museums (Dkr 150 in 2018).
