Vysehrad National Cultural Monument, Bohemia, Czech Republic

4.5 (3.079 reviews) Spent Ranking #18 in Prague Historic Sites • Lookouts • Monuments & Statues

Get away from the crowds and cool off on a hot summer day with stunning views.

This was a nice break from the bustle of the main tourist area. Take a short walk from the metro station. The signage makes it easy to find. There is nice shade in many areas and the views are great. You can explore at leisure for free, but there are modest fees to go in some of the buildings, such as the cathedral and art gallery. The cemetery is fascinating and not to be missed.

    Sunday morning trip for views.
Myself and my 19 year old son were in Prague for the last weekend before total isolation lock down. 12th to 15th March 2020. Museums, libraries, galleries, restaurants all closed, but this area was open and easy to reach. We jumped on the metro red line and went down to Vysehrad stop, then it was an easy ten minutes walk west following the signs. It is a large walled area with many buildings, but also grass areas and benches where locals stopped for a picnic. It had different views back along the river towards the new castle and the spires all over Prague. There was a small cafe open with outside tables, and the beer was larger and cheaper than coke!!!! We walked around the whole site, taking photos in every direction, easy walk, few steps, but you are with locals, very few other tourists at all. After 90 minutes we walked back to the metro and came back to the centre of Prague. Ticket machines at all stations were in English and took credit cards.

    Historic fort; great views
This historic fort was built on a hill above the Vltava river in the 10th century as one of the first settlements in the area. A castle and church were built there and this was the seat for rulers until the seat of power was moved to Prague Castle in the 12th century. The area now has a park that goes throughout the facility. It is in a quiet residential area. There is no entry fee. The views around the outer walls provide great photos of the castle and city. There is a cemetery with large tombs containing some of the most famous Czech persons. On the East side of the cemetery you will find a large tomb with a large statue of Slavin on top built in the 19th century. This is the common tomb of selected personalities. Next to the cemetery is the neo-gothic Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul. Entry into the Basilica is free. This is a great place to visit to get away from the hectic tourist area and see great views of the city. It is only a 10 minute walk from the Vysehrad metro station.
