The Hussite Museum, Bohemia, Czech Republic

4.5 (115 reviews) Spent 1-2 hours Ranking #2 in South Bohemian Region Speciality Museums

A good museum showing the history the Hussites and Tabor.

There is a surprising amount in this museum and if you have an interest in the history of the Hussites, this is the place for you. There are quite detailed exhibits showing much of the history. Under the museum lies a series of tunnels that can be travelled through with a guide. However it is worth noting that the guide spoke only Czech and for someone who is not a Czech speaker, the tunnels might be less interesting, although still quite good.

    Way better than expected
Very inexpensive admission, wonderful intro movie (English subtitled) about Medieval Europe history, included audio guide that is almost too thorough (easy to skip ahead to sections you want to hear and just read brief English signs for the rest). Highly recommend this place - an informative, well-done find in this tiny town!

    Very informative and interesting
The Hussite museum was way more interesting and informative than I expected. The permanent exposition is in chronological order and you learn a lot not just about the hussite movement and medieval Europe, but about history of a little-known protestant reformation in Bohemia, or the effect the Hussite movement had on the course of Czech history and the influence on the national enlightenment movement. After visiting this museum everybody will have a clearer idea about the Czech history and the perils of this region in the past. Ask for the english audio guide as the written english descriptions are brief and rather random. As part of the visit to the museum, you can also visit the ingenious labyrinth of tunnels under the main square, houses and streets here. The townspeople dug cellars under their houses and these were subsequently interconnected after the 2nd world war. An approximately 1 km-long section of the tunnel system is open to the public. You get a helmet and you can explore with the guide. Beware the floor is very slippery. During the time of our visit the temporary exposition on the 2nd floor included a contemporary art exhibition and a small informative exhibition about Hieronymus Pragensis (Jeronym Prazsky).
