A must do!

The lookout tower was built for the General Land Centennial Exhibition in 1891 by the initiative of the founders of Czech Tourist Club: Dr. Vilem Kurz and architect Vratislav Pasovsky. Having been inspired by the Paris lookout tower designed by engineer Eiffel, Petrin Hill which is 318 m high was chosen for the structure. The construction began on March 16, 1891, according to the initial design of architect Vratislav Pasovsky further elaborated by engineers Frantisek Prasil and Julius Soucek from Czech and Moravia Machine Works (Ceskomoravska strojirna). The opening ceremony took place on August 20 of the same year. The foundations were laid 11 meters underground to hold the 63.5-metre tall steel construction that weighed 175 tons. An octagonal tube is the core of the structure with the lift surrounded by two spiral staircases with 299 stairs - one for each direction. The entire structure includes bracing elements in the shape of Saint Andrew's crosses. The tower has two lookout landings; the upper one is 55 metres high. The ground floor and basement are situated in a neo-Renaissance building. At the beginning of July 1938, the top of the tower was damaged by fire, probably caused by a short circuit in the lift cage. The observation tower was a TV transmission tower between 1953 and 1992. Today, it is only used as a lookout tower.

    My favourite view of Prague
The Petrin tower is not as cheap as it was but still at around £7, it is a great view for the price. There is a lift if you can't manage the steps but it costs extra. There are places to sit and rest on the way up too if you need to and refreshments available at the bottom in the kiosk or the cafe. There are two staircases, an up and a down one which spiral together so if you break your ascent at the first level, make sure you get the one going the right way otherwise it gets a little awkward! The view from the top is great and it is enclosed so its not too freezing if its a cold day. Personally, this is an easy ascent and a great view of the city.

    Nice View of Prague city
A good view of the Prague city can be seen from the tower. To go up the tower an Entrance fee of 150 CZK is needed for Adults. The Elevator fee is another CZK 150 for Adults. If you have a plan to see the "Mirror Maze" near the tower, better ask for combined tickets which just costs CZK 210. (Online ticketing options are also available which will further help you save the cost for the visit) If possible to climb up during night - It should give you an exceptional feel of Prague. The gardens around is also nice to nourish yourself specially when the roses bloom. If you take 24 hour pass for Metro/Bus/Train, the funicular ride is included. From the Tower you can get distant views of most attractions in Prague like Cathedral, National Theater, Dancing building, Charles Bridge etc To conclude, the Tower is not a "Must See" attraction in Prague when you consider the price for the tickets including the elevator that can take you to the top of tower. (Which is ~51 meter in height with ~300 steps to climb w/o elevator) Similar view of the city can be seen when you climb up the Petrin Hill or from the Prague Cathedral or from Letná Gardens (Obviously angles and what is seen will be different)
