Nutcracker: A Christmas Carol

Visiting this stunning building is an amazing experience, but watching the Nutcracker as well was a sublime thing to do! I’ve been to famous theatres in Moscow, Milan & Vienna, but never saw live performances. The show was breathtaking; from the actors to the music and even the lighting, it was all perfect. My advice is to book wayyy in advance for the shows, I did so only around 2 weeks before coming to Prague, and the only ‘seat’ I found was in the 2nd floor, standing on a balcony for 2 hours! Still, the experience was surreal. Snacks sold there are delicious as well.

The impressive national monument of Czech art
The National Theatre in Prague is known as the alma mater of Czech opera. First opened in 1881, and for the second time in 1883 after a devastating fire. The spectacular exterior and interior decoration, richly embellished with gold, consists of masterpieces of 19th-century Czech painters. Today the National Theatre consists of three artistic ensembles: opera, ballet, and drama. They alternate in their performances in the historic building of the National Theatre, in the Theatre of the Estates, and in the Kolowrat Theatre. We have seen our best Nutcracker at this theater in 2007.

    So glad to be back...
The stars aligned and we were able to get great - 12th row - tickets for a wonderful performance. I have always loved coming back, no matter what we could get the tickets for. To be inside the amazing building and experience once again the fun and excitement, matters most to me. It was a beautiful Fall evening and getting dressed up a bit for the occasion was part of the fun. I do enjoy the formality of the evening, the glass of champagne during intermission , and quick walk (lots of steps) to the side roof, seeing the huge statues up close, the amazing views. Looking down on the Legii bridge and across the river where I used to live many years ago, was an emotional experience. The Czechs love the arts and music, going to the theater was part of my growing up. Learning the history and meaning to the Czech Nation was taught in school. Narod Sobe - means Nation for itself. This sign in gold letters is prominently displayed above the curtain. When the Theater tragically burned down shortly after the construction was completed, it was considered a national tragedy. The Theater was rebuilt quickly, with determination and donations from the people from all over the country. Going to the theater is a special occasion for the Czech people. You will be able to spot them easily in the audience. Walking back to the hotel, alongside the river, stopping to admire the lights over the castle and bridges was a wonderful ending to a great evening. Note : there is a coat check available, should you need to wear a coat. Draping it over the seats or putting it on the floor is not considerate.
