NOT FOR EXPERTS OR TOTAL BEGINNERS!

Skiing in Bansko is not for complete beginners or experts and it is not for those who like to ski first lift to last. My partner and I are very good skiers (I am an instructor) and we wanted a short break that was not going to be rammed with others. Some fresh snow when we arrived and most runs open but from midday the small size of the resort caused every run to be rammed with out of control idiots. We took to ski first thing and finish at mid-day which gave us the best for each day. The single gondola often created as much as a 3 hour wait which can be mitigated by getting a taxi to the ski area proper or get hold of a ‘fast track’ ticket. Total beginners are not well served here and experts will be bored after a couple of days. Fresh snow provides some off-piste but is soon tracked out. Costs at the on hill outlets seems to be up to who is taking your money, changeable daily. The town offers plenty of places to eat and, for those who want it, active apres ski.

Nice place, horrible locals, average skiing
Have had a great week with my boys, but it’s in spite of the place really. The locals are so horrible it’s funny. Don’t come here if you don’t have fairly thick skin - they are pretty open about how much they hate you (I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just us). The town is fun and there are loads of bars and restaurants which all have identical menus. In general the food is fine but the service is totally shocking. I guess it’s a combination of the general hatred and owners saving cash on salaries. On the skiing, we found it very bumpy - not much easy skiing on the blues. The reds are better. Big issue is the gondola to the top. To get onto it requires 2 hours of queuing. You either suffer that every day or grab a dodgy minibus. We did it but were terrified every time. We won’t come back here and I probably wouldn’t recommend it to anyone (apart from a Bulgarian) due to the overcrowding and hateful locals.

Not good for complete beginners in busy half term week
We came to Bansko for a skiing trip based on it being recommended for beginners. I wouldn’t say it is. There are no green runs (apart from a couple of tiny slopes that are so packed with beginners you spend more time queuing than on the slopes). I had a two hour lesson and managed to get 2 runs in. I think because there isn’t the availability of the green runs it is tempting beginners that are not ready onto the blue runs - which is exactly the mistake I made and have ended up with a knee injury and no more skiing for the rest of the holiday. Wish we had paid a bit more money and gone to the alps. It’s not a bad resort - and I think the runs are probably fine for people once they know what they are doing, but it’s no good for beginners in a busy half term week.
