Short Walk to Temple Yielded a Lot of Fun!
I decided we wanted to go here instead of the monkey forest in Ubud, as I had read that the monkeys here were not aggressive. We asked our wonderful driver from Ubud (contact me if you'd like to use him) if we could combine a trip here with the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces and he said yes, easily. We went in the afternoon and the driver pointed us in the direction of the temple, which is where the monkeys apparently spend most of their time. It wasn't far to walk (maybe a minute?) and when there, we immediately found the monkeys running around. There were some babies, plus quite a few adults. They were not the least aggressive, but of course, we did not try to lure them to us or bother them -- just watched them from maybe 20 feet or so. They were playing in a small pool-like cement structure in front of the temple, crawling on the temple, etc. We followed a couple around to the side of the temple, where there were more. My photographs came out absolutely wonderfully, and we had a fabulous time watching them. I have no idea of whether this was a typical experience. All I know is that I was glad our driver pointed us in the direction of the temple, as it's not like the monkeys are everywhere in the forest. There were maybe 5 men sitting near the temple, which I assume were guides. They didn't approach us; perhaps because they assumed we were with a driver, perhaps just because they assumed we didn't need any help finding the monkeys! I guess if you don't see the monkeys right away, but if you do see an Indonesian person sitting near the temple, you may want to ask if they know where the monkeys are. We probably spent 45 minutes or so there. It turned out to be one of our favorite experiences in the 3 days we spent in Bali. I don't remember the price, as I jumped out of the driver's vehicle close to the entrance, so either my spouse or the driver paid the admission, if any. Parking was available near by.

    Very friendly monkeys
At first we didn't't think we were going to see any monkeys as we'd visited in the afternoon and our guide told us that the morning was best. Thankfully there were local guides that tempted them down from the trees with their favourite starfruit and before long we were inundated with Macaques all happy to sit on your head or shoulder for a piece of starfruit and a photo. It does come at a cost, the local guides expect to be paid, but it was only the equivalent of £5.
