Our favourite temple !

Originally we were gonna see 'Pura Gunung Kawi' temple with big statues but our driver got mixed up and took us to 'Gunung Kawi Sebatu' - both similar names and close to each other so easy to make mistake We were so happy though that we ended up here as at the time there was a local ceremony and to witness Balinese culture first hand was an AMAZING EXPERIENCE! Because of the ceremony the complex was decorated in stunning flowers, Balinese people were dressed up beautifully and women carried the fruit offerings on top of their heads. The whole place just looked MAGICAL, filled with burning incenses, clear water ponds, gorgeous carvings. Very peaceful temple not touristy as others.

    Perfection! A must-see!
We visited many temples while in the Ubud area, but this was my favorite because of the gorgeous rice fields. You'll pay 50 Indonesian rupees per person for entry, and this includes a sarong. Both men and women need to wear these while visiting. Your walk to the temple begins with many steps down, but the steps are through photogenic rice terraces that I found breathtaking. This satisfied my craving for an authentic rice terrace experience, which I was unable to get at Tegalalang (see separate review). Also, during this walk we discovered that they have a swing here, and I would have much preferred the atmosphere here at Gunung Kawi on a swing to the one we had at Tegalalang. The cave temples are stunning and a feat to contemplate. I hope you enjoy Gunung Kawi as much as we did!

Water Temple, NOT the Statues Temple
Per the reviews seen thus far, reviewers have confused this water temple with Pura Gunung Kawi which is down in a valley surrounded by paddies with large stone statues carved out of the cliffside. That is NOT this temple. This temple is just under 5 km from 'Pura Gunung Kawi' whereas this is a small water temple called 'Gunung Kawi Sebatu'. Don't confuse the two. This is a less visited temple due to the name confusion and Tirta Empul Temple being the more popular water temple. You can bathe here in the spring water pools (separate male/female) without fighting the crowds normally seen at Tirta Empul. Great spot.
