Bamboo Masterclass

Whether or not you’re interested in sustainable and responsible architecture, you will definitely come away feeling inspired by the landscape and the creativity of these sculptural dwellings. The houses, each unique in their design, could be something from the most whimsical of fairy tales. Only there’s nothing childlike about these structures. The simplicity of the design belies the complexity of their sophisticated construction and use of materials. The team behind the Green Village (IBUKU) are true innovators in a world where repetition and characterless mass production has become the norm. If you’re looking to have your senses awakened, visit Knez Mardin and the team at Green Village for an unforgettable experience.

    PERFECT
The Green Village tour is a must see for anyone interested in sustainable architecture. The remarkable bamboo houses we visited took our breath away with the beauty of their designs and the attention to even the smallest detail. Adhy our guide was excellent and explained everything from the bamboo raw material treatment and processing right through to the finishing details of the houses, all in very good English. We were served a very tasty home cooked lunch after our tour. We will back again next year bringing our parents to stay in one of these marvelous houses!

    Confusing
As far as I can tell, Green Village (which is an Eco-hotel made of bamboo structures) run bookings for tours of the Green School, classes at the Bamboo factory and tours of all three sites. The prices are high, and the pick-up/drop off service is exorbitant, but hella good luck figuring out where you are supposed to be if you decide to take a taxi instead. After having trouble getting through on the phone (and enduring more than one baffling conversation with the booking person once we did) we both turned up for our separate courses at the Green School, only to find that the Green School tour was a tour of a children's school instead of of tour of bamboo architecture that I was expecting, and that my partner's bamboo joinery lesson was somewhere else entirely (though it was not clear where). Google maps address of at least one of these sites was incorrect, and our taxi driver of course used our confusion in a rural area as an excuse to extort us thoroughly. Finally, my partner had his one-on-one bamboo joinery class with a lovely man who is clearly a passionate master of the art (which is at the Bamboo factory, for all those who are confused!) and I got to at least view some of the bamboo architecture at the school. It was otherwise an extremely expensive and frustrating day. It's a shame that this group don't have it together a bit more, because there is amazing stuff for people to see and do here.
