The Jewish Museum of Greece, Attica, Greece

Wonderful, must-see museum!

If you are interested in Jewish history and culture this is a must-see museum. Other reviews may call it small and modest but it is by far not the smallest museum I have enjoyed in Greece. Many artefacts to do with Jewish life, including costumes, jewelry and metalwork, religious objects, Holocaust artefacts, and oral testimony are housed in this small building. The museum is enhanced by a mobile app with further details on interesting objects. They also have a small gift shop with jewelry, clothing, books, and postcards. Student visitors get a 50% discount even with a non-European student card.

    A gem of a museum--fascinating!
Behind an unassuming door lies one of the most interesting museums that I have ever visited! The history of the Jews of Greece dates from the fourth century BC up to the present day, with important chapters related to the inquisition and to the Holocaust. The building of this museum is interestingly arranged with fascinating artifacts and stories. I am grateful that most of the signs were in English as well as Greek. And the small gift shop has lovely and reasonable jewelry as well as books and CDs related to the Jews of Greece. Before the Holocaust, Sephardic Jews speaking Ladino, and smaller groups of Helenite and Ashkenazi Jews were scattered in robust communities throughout the country. A visit to this museum inspired me to visit Jewish monuments and museums in Ioannina and Thessaloniki. Fascinating!

    Excellent museum, worth a visit.
For a specialty museum, it is right on. It tells the story of the long history of the Jews in Greece. You can download a free app to guide you through the museum. You scan the QR code for each section and you get guided via an audio player. Well worth a visit.
