    Worth Taking A Detour For
Despite the long queues (we had gone on a rainy day) this was well worth a visit. The buildings are in the shape of a dinosaur footprint, are vaulted wood inside and beautifully airy. The exhibits, although mostly replicas, are well explained and set out in a very logical and entertaining sequence. An audio guide is available for a small fee but we found that the written guide was sufficient. There are also various model dinosaurs in the grounds and these were very well done. The Playa de la Griega is only a short drive away and 600m along a footpath you get to see dinosaur footprints in situ.

    Vast and overwhelming.
I wanted to like this museum as I'm really interested in geology and palaeontology, but I'd visited a couple of other museums in Asturias beforehand while on holiday and found a similar formula (not exlusive to Spain, I might add): seemingly tons of money spent on an architectural wonder with disappointingly spare exhibits knocking about within. Way too much space spent on monster dinosaur fossils, I thought, at the expense of the smaller, more varied fossils of plants and sea creatures presented at the very end, unfortunately just as mental powers are beginning to fade... The dinosaur models outside were painted in gaudy colours to appeal to children, I guess, and the gift shop was also geared almost entirely towards them. Personally, I was more impressed by the sight of a large, near-threatened Emerald Green Lizard lurking at the base of a stone wall in the Desfilerado de Hermida later in the week. There are modern reminders of creatures of dinosaur-like appearance living in the world today. Hopefully they won't become extinct as well due to our selfish stupidity.
