Street Sculptures, New Mexico, United States

Great Destination

Only by accident did we come across the information of street sculptures in Artesia. They were so good that we would go out of our way to see them and advise you to do the same. There are numerous clusters of sculpture scenes throughout this small city. There is a scene of a working oil rig with workers. Near the library is a stack of Classics with children atop. There are cowboy roping scenes and more. These and more are all in bronze.

    Low expectations yield Great Delight
We did a self-guided (wandering) walking tour of downtown Artesia and were totally delighted with the quality, intensity, and variety of the bronze sculptures. The artists capture the moment and the accompanying plaques paint a word picture of their inspiration. Don't miss the bronze oil rig set in a flowing artesian well representation surrounded by sculptures of significant contributors to the local energy exploration boom. Next, go to the library to view the huge mural and watch the video of the relocation process. Don't forget to look up to appreciate the construction and bracing of the mural.

    A good walk about
We really enjoyed the multitude of bronze sculptures. Good photo opportunities. The downtown area is quaint and pedestrian friendly. Stop by the library and check out the relocated Hurd mural. The smell of gas is another topic.
