Centre de Decouverte des Sciences et de la Terre (Science and Earth Discovery Center), Arrondissement of Saint-Pierre, Martinique

3.5 (103 reviews) Saturday: 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Spent Ranking #7 in Arrondissement of Saint-Pierre Speciality Museums

Nice low key educational program.

At the base of Mt. PELEE (BEAUTIFUL views of the volcano) is this educational center. Worth the visit. Although not advertised well in English, ask for the audio guide (in English if you need) and the visit is great.

Interesting building and video, but otherwise it needs modernizing
The building itself looks interesting, the video about volcanos and Mount Pellee is informative. The admission is relatively cheap, comparing to other places that we visited on Martinique. However. I think that this museum needs modernizing. For example: the video was made in 2002, which is almost twenty years ago. Since then many things happened (for example the eruption of the volcano on Iceland), also the situation on Monserrat changed. So you learn new information but be aware that it might be little bit outdated. Modern museums are concentrated on stories (at least from my experience). It would be great if got to know more about people who passed away during the erruption. It would be also better if the exposition was more interecative. Many information pannels were only in French. Also, the chairs in the room with the video were too cold for siting (I am little bit sensitive to this). So make sure you bring a sweater or something to sit on. Overall, I think that this museum looks like it was build twenty years ago and since then nobody is taking care about its development. There are many things that could be improved and some of them wouldn't be even expensive to carry out. It's a pity, since according to the signs all over the island, it seemed like a must see place to visit.
