Murallas de Albarracin, Aragon, Spain

4.5 (735 reviews) Spent Ranking #3 in Province of Teruel Points of Interest & Landmarks

Gorgeous must see

This village is like nothing else we have ever seen. We explored it for a little over an hour right at sunset, and the city was a glow. It is not an easy place to get to but the ride there and back is extremely interesting with hiking trails in Roman ruins.

    If these walls could talk!
Albarracin is probably the most beautiful town in all of Aragon, some would argue in all of Spain but to speak of superlatives when speaking of towns in Spain is like trying to judge a Miss Universe pageant where ever contestant is beautiful in her own way! I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and after walking its' streets and enjoying some cold brew with local cheese and charcuterie to gain some sustenance I headed up towards the town's walls. I eventually found the little path and after about 15 minutes I was walking in the shadow of these immense walls. I thought to myself if these walls could talk the centuries of stories they could tell! I tried to resist looking back down until I was as high as possible, but of course the view was always good and like an incredibly attractive person I just couldn't take my eyes off this fabled town. When I finally reached the highest point I could I was rewarded with a most wonderful view of Albarracin and its' surroundings! Yes it's true one must be careful and yes I know that those with physical disabilities will find it hard to access but are there solutions to this? Maybe but one must be careful because if you pave the path and put guardrails, maybe a road with a parking lot...well you risk the area losing its' enchantment sorry but we all know that's true. The short hike had me huffing and puffing but I did it and promised myself I need to get back in shape! The walls are just one component of Albarracin, others are its' ancient streets, its' surrounding scenery which at times can be quite dramatic another its' river and the trail that follows it (I'll do that one next time!). But definitely if you're able to make the effort to climb above the town to see Albarracin's walls and take in the views from above, you'll be happy you did!

Some of the old curtain town wall is still there after hundreds of years
The town is named for the Hawwara Berber dynasty of the Banu Razin which was their capital from the early eleventh century until it was taken by the Almoravids in 1104.[ You can climb the hill and walk on a tiny part of the walls with great views of the town.
