Delightful
Rumor has it that this beautiful tower was once tiled in gold; now, it houses a museum detailing the maritime history of the city.

Old military lookout now a museum by the River
Monday 16th May while walking along the riverfront of the Rio Guadalquivir in the City of Saville and we saw this old Tower. It is very close to the famous bullring, Plaza de toros de la Real Maestranza. The Tower is a dodecagonal, twelve sided, former military watchtower and stands 36 metres (118 feet). It is known as the Torre del Oro, which translates as Tower of gold. It was built in between 1220 to 1221. It was once a place where ships, visiting Saville, could unload and store their cargo of gold. The centre part of the Tower was used as a prison. The tower now houses a naval museum on the first floor, the entrance fee is €3.It is also possible to climb up to the viewing platform on the roof for views across the City and along the River. Sadly due to time constraints it was not possible for us to visit the Museum, but was certainly worth stopping for a look as we walked by. There was a red flag, with three large letter C's, flying beside the tower, this commemorates the 500th anniversary of Magallanes-Elcano circumnavigation of the world in 1522.

ICONIC SITE
The Gold Tower of Seville is one of the most iconic and characteristic elements of the city. Due to its location next to the Guadalquivir River, and to its unique shape, the tower has great interest and is a must to see if in Seville. My wife and I visited the site as part of a larger guided tour and found the experience interesting.
