Sinagoga de Córdoba, Andalucia, Spain

Small, But Interesting.

Located not far from Puerta del Almodovar- Just turn right down the first street you come to and it's on your right about 75 metres down. The synagogue dates from 1315, but after the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, the same year in which Columbus crossed the Atlantic Ocean, the building served as a hospital and later a community centre. It's quite small inside, but worth visiting nonetheless. There are information boars at different locations inside. It was free to enter.

    Old building, lots of history
This Sinagoga, or Synagogue, dates to the early 14th century. It's quite small and it's thought that it may have been the private synagogue of some wealthy family. It is located in the Jewish quarter, in the city historic centre. The architecture looks quite impressive and it is certainly worth a visit as it is full of history.

    Pay your respects
It's true, as some have noted, that there is not much to see here except the restored ruins of a former synagogue. But it's important for an understanding of the historic (mis)treatment of Spanish Jews. If you are interested in knowing more, just step across the street to the often overlooked Casa de Sefarad, a small museum that explains much more about the lives of the Sephardic Jews who originated here before being expelled to North Africa and the Middle East. If you are lucky, you'll here one of the guides chanting traditional prayers. There are periodic guided tours but you're also free to take a self-guided tour.
