Fascinating Experience of Almeria's Past

The network of sherlters meant the excavation of 2.80 miles of underground galleries, at more 29 feet deep, and 67 manholes for access. This system protected about 35,000 poeple out of a total of aproximately 50,000 inhabitants the city had those years. The main tunnel of the refuge goes underneath the "Paseo de Almeria", with a main passage six and a half feet wide and two benches along each side for seating. The Refuge of Almeria has become Europe's largest opne to the public in the present day. Its recovery as a cultural and historical element, its symbolism as witness to the Spanish Civil War, and its architectural-engineering value, place this works as one of the most important built in Almeria during the twentieth century, as well as it constitutes one of the most significant elements of the cultural heritage and historical memory of the city. The visit takes one hour, always in a guided tour in spanish, but we star the visit with a video with english subtitles.

    History of a dark past
You have to book a tour online in advance and the price is 3 Euros per person. The tour lasts about an hour and starts with a film with testimonials from people of Almeria who lived during the Spanish Civil War. Almeria was the last place in Andalucia to be held by the Republican forces. After the film you are guided down to the tunnel which is 9 meters below ground. Note that the tour is in Spanish and you are given some details about how people accessed and shared the refuge and you see the hospital and operating theatre part. It is worth a visit.

    Well worth a visit
Although not many people's idea of a fun day out, this is nonetheless a fascinating yet sobering experience. The tunnels played a huge part in protcting the locals from Franco's allies and were largely responsible for the fact that Almeria was the last major city to fall to his forces. Our guide (English-speaking) was excellent and the sound of the traffic above often sounded as if we were being bombed for real, although we did have the benefit of electric light which would have been denied to those sheltering down here.
