The Extra Mile Tours, Alaska, United States

A great tour of an "unexplored" Alaskan port....

We visited Dutch Harbor in September during our cruise.and Bobbie of Extra Mile Tours did an excellent job introducing us to this lovely island. There is a lot of history here and as other reviewers have mentioned, it takes a local to really tell you about the history. Bobbie made a special arrangement with the church (which was actually closed the day we were there) to have someone open the church for our group to show and tell us about its history. I would highly recommend Bobbie and Extra Mile Tours whenever you visit this area.

    An Essential Orientation
Unalaska/Dutch Harbor is chock full of history, but if you don't know where to look for it, you'll be driving around reading signage and missing most of what is here. If you're only in town for work or to fish, you probably don't care about this anyway. But if you like history, botany, birding (especially eagles), native culture, archaeology, local background and stories, a tour with Bobbie is a prerequisite for being on the island. The fishing and fish processing industry overshadows the town, but there are ample tales worth learning and sites to see and Bobbie is the one to take you. She picks you up and tailors the time to suit you so don't be shy to tell her what your interests might be. We rode with her for four hours and found the time ample and valuable. One after thought, our 11 year old daughter was in a funk and I wish we had left her in the hotel room with the TV while her Mom and I enjoyed learning and seeing so much. I highly recommend the tour and wish similar ones were as readily available in other locations. Bobbie does this because of her passion for the lore of the community and her desire to share it with others.
