Nature and history in the same place
Bomarsund is a very good place to visit if you are interested in history and/or wandering in the nature. In my opinion this is not a place for small children because you have to walk quite alot. The main attraction are the ruins of the fortress (small children are perhaps not so interested in). There is also a cafe and camping area at Bomarsund. Overall a lovely place to visit!

Unique architecture unlike anything else on Åland.
I saw the ruins without first knowing its history and was quite surprised by the structure's polygonal segments which are found nowhere else on Åland. Thankfully there are well-written signs explaining the history of the Russian fortress in Swedish, Finnish, and English. The ruins are located amongst beautiful rolling hills above the bay. Totally worth a visit.

Evocative ruin
A a Brit you are aware that you come from a rampantly belligerent nation. However it came as some surprise that we had fought an action in the Arland islands which was a highly peripheral engagement to the Crimean war. The Russians had been building a hugely impressive semicircular fortress at this strategic point. It was nearing completion when a Anglo French fleet arrived forcing subsequent surrender and subsequent demolition. All that marks the site are overgrown piles of bricks and some preserved.restored outer walls made up of huge polygonal blocks of the red granite. It is well sign posted with plenty of information panels. There is also a small, recently installed memorial to the action detailing the award of a Victoria Cross.
