Very lovely place
Drive here on a cloudy morning, there is free parking nearby. Luckily I came before it got full. The castle is lovely and the area around it is spectacular, with nice views over the lake. It also has an open-air museum with someone playing a very nice violin. It's a nice place and a nice location, worth a visit.

Impressive site
The Kastelholma castle is an impressive sight in the countryside. I visited it soon after it opened so is wasn't packed. Unfortunately the guided tour was already fully booked but the audio guide was quite OK. I think the audio guide tour took an hour or so but it took you to all the places. Nice views from the top of the castle to the surrounding area. The castle is mostly empty but there is some interesting pieces still. With the same ticket one can also visit the near by Jan Karlsgården open-air-museum and the Vita Björn prsion museum.

A diverting three hours
An easy drive from Mariehamn by car, surprisingly we ended spending a good part of the afternoon here. It’s a cluster of sights including a prison, preserved wooden buildings and the castle itself. The castle is suitably austere and atmospheric. There was plenty of informative panels in Swedish, Finnish and English. It involves a scramble up and down stairways and walkways to get the measure of the place. The prison comprised a small building where the warden’s family lived on site was fascinating. There was a guide on hand for orientation. He also pointed out the Russian era whipping post which was described as receiving “Russian massage”There was a small park of rural buildings dating eighteenth and nineteenth proving insights into cottage industries and agricultural life. We had lunch at the distillery that was very pleasant.
