Oakleigh Historic District, Alabama, United States

4.5 (20 reviews) Spent 2-3 hours Ranking #25 in Mobile Neighborhoods • Historic Walking Areas

Beautiful Old South Neighborhood

The Oakleigh Historic District is a pretty drive through to see some beautiful old restored homes. There are also some excellent restaurants in the area. It is not a place that I would want to be walking around in after dark due to the location.

Oakleigh Historic District Provides Historic Walk Through the Past
This review is of the Oakleigh Historic District, the area surrounding the historic Oakleigh House. I visited Mobile last week (mid-May 2016) and the house is closed for renovation. But DO NOT MISS walking around the neighborhood known as Oakleigh Historic District. At he heart of it is Washington Park--incredible live-oaks and Spanish moss and surrounded by lovely historic homes. The great thing about this neighborhood is that the restored historic homes cover a wide range of styles and economic status levels. If you want to see opulent ante bellum palaces, go to Natchez. But if you want to see a living, breathing community of everything from fabulously wealthy to upper-middle class to professional to simple working class, the Oakleigh Historic District is the place to see. Really cool, especially with the Yardi Gras Porch Parade
Due to covid, Mobile didn't have their parades. Instead, folks decorated their houses with items from the floats in various neighborhoods and called it Yardi Gras (no lie). Oakleigh Historic District was one of the best. Beautiful homes. Pretty gardens. Easy to walk. If you're there, make sure you keep heading east to the Church Street East neighborhood (south side of Government from Broad to Mardi Gras Park), especially for parks (British, Spanish Plaza and Mardi Gras Park), and drinks at Serda (though Callaghans Irish Social at Marine and Charleston looked fun. We just didn't have masks, so we didn't go in). Either way, you'll have a nice walk and be rewarded with "refreshments" after!
