Sunset Ferry Ride

The Mobile Bay Ferry crosses beautiful Mobile Bay, Alabama and connects SR 193 at Dauphin Island on the west side with SR 180 at Mobile Point on the east. Considered “the Gulf-Coast’s Most Scenic Drive”, the ferry saves travelers hours of driving time plus the high cost of fuel by providing a travel link across the mouth of Mobile Bay. The trip between Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island and Fort Morgan at Mobile Point provides wonderful views of the two historic forts that have long guarded the entrance of Mobile Bay. The trip takes approximately 40 minutes and is a great way for passengers to view birds, sea life and other boats and ships. The ferry service utilizes two ferries, the Fort Morgan and the Marissa Mae Nicole to carry passengers and vehicles across the Bay. At least one ferry operates year-round with both ferries operating during the busy summer months.

A convenient way to get to dauphin island
There is not much to see along the way, but the crew is efficient and know how to get everyone loaded properly. It takes about 30 minutes from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan. You may stay in your vehicle (with the ignition off) or get out and look around during the ride. They alternate pick ups between the small (fits approx. 18 cars) and large ferries. You can also get on without a car. They recommend getting there 30 minutes prior to departure and they aren’t joking since space is limited! Admission is $15 per vehicles (under 22 ft) and $6 per person for ages 4+. We were able to bring a cooler and stroller along in the car, which made the trip to the aquarium a bit more convenient with little ones.

    A nice trouble free ride
A nice alternative to a drive. The ferry was clean and on time. While crossing we saw dolphins and several large birds. Going around sunset was spectacular with the colors reflecting off the water. The price does seem a bit high but the ride was terrific so the cost seemed to melt away. Our only issue was that the ticket seller refused our cash payment "for security reasons" . This practice of only accepting cards is good business for banks.... who did such a great job in 2008...why do we allow this? We wrote to ask for an explanation, and the management immediately responded that they do take cash; the speed of response was very appreciated. So, do insist on cash payment or ask the ticket seller to call the supervisor.
